Our School
Little Acorns is founded in traditional Montessori teaching methods but with a more modern twist. We combine the best of both worlds by using highly successful Montessori methods to teach language and number skills, but we also embrace the fun of childhood providing learning opportunities through play, crafts, field trips and exploration.
Within our community classroom of 16 children, Cathie and Mimi guide learning allowing freedom within limits and following the cues provided by children to the next steps in their learning.
As a class, we tap maple trees in the winter and gather the sap to turn into syrup for the children to take home, we plant seeds in the spring and maintain a vibrant vegetable garden that the children pick from and eat fresh or use to make snacks. We also grow and harvest lavender that we dry to use in crafts and gifts for parents. We bake our own bread and muffins to use in the class and all the children help to maintain our fish tank, allowing them to learn about the where food comes from and also how to care for their own environment. We stress self sufficiency and care for the environment and each other giving all children a sense of purpose and pride in the work that they do.
We provide adventures by taking a school bus on field trips to different locations throughout the GTA several times a year and invite parents to join us to solidify the connection with the Little Acorns family.
